January 2008 - Parish Magazine Update

To brighten up those cold and dull days of January, we have decided to begin the New Year here at Chapel Lane Pre-school with a colourful new topic - Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes.  Not only does this topic give us a chance to cosy down in the book corner and listen to some favourite and classic stories, it also enables us to cover a large part of our Foundation Stage curriculum.

Fairy tales are a great way of covering the creative aspect of the children's development, as we can do so much with them.  This month the children will each take turns dressing up and enacting the story of Red Riding Hood and using our puppets to tell the stories of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Three Little Pigs.  Role play and story telling are very important in improving children's communication, language and literacy skills.  The pre-schoolers will also enjoy making their own puppets to take home.

We will also be making with the children, an edible Hansel and Gretel house and Jam Tarts - like the Queen of Hearts!  Cooking with children is also a vital part of their education.  Not only will it be an important life skill later on in life, but also young children can learn so much from the activity, whilst having a lot of fun.  Children learn about different weights and measures whilst measuring the ingredients they need.  They experience each of the five different senses whilst cooking and they also learn about the concept of change.  Cookery is a good physical workout too, as it uses both fine and gross motor skills.

Nursery rhymes such as "One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Once I caught a Fish Alive" and "Ten Currant Buns in a Baker Shop" amongst others, will help with numeracy the month The Grand Old Duke of York will enable us to experiment with musical instruments and rhythm.  The children will also have the opportunity of making their own musical instruments using different amount of water in milk bottles and experimenting with the different sounds they make.  It's going to be a busy month!
